WORLD BOOK DAY
What a truly wonderful day - simply spectacular and stupendously splendid!
Many of the children chose to dress up as their favourite book characters, and they looked absolutely brilliant. Others came in cosy pyjamas so they could feel as snug as a bug in a rug while reading. Some children preferred to wear their school uniform, which we didn’t mind one bit - it was lovely to see everyone celebrating in their own way.
Our morning began a little differently as we made our way into the school hall - and for very good reason. We were delighted to welcome published poet, rapper and laureate winner Alex Wharton. He captivated us by playing instruments, sharing how he expresses himself through writing, and performing some of his catchy and creative poems. Firm favourites among the children included Trains, Jelly Bean and Horse on the Loo!
After the assembly, pupils in Years 5 and 6 were given an exciting opportunity to take part in a workshop with Alex. During the session, he read two poems aloud and, as we listened, we were challenged to sketch the images that came to mind. Mr. Slime and The Jelly Bean Thief were wonderfully weird and imaginative poems that truly got our creative juices flowing. We even got to write our very own piece of poetry which a few children were very brave to perform in front of the rest of the two classes.
In the afternoon, the children rounded off the day with a fun-filled Blooket quiz all about famous book characters what a fantastic way to end our celebrations!
A huge thank you to Alex Wharton for delivering such an inspirational workshop and an unforgettable assembly. Who would have thought poetry could be so cool?
